CambridgeDocs xDoc Product Family Architecture

CambridgeDocs flagship xDoc product family allows content developers like yourself to convert Microsoft Word, Adobe PDF, Adobe FrameMaker, and HTML files into stylistic and semantic XML, and from there (re)publish the XML again as PDF, HTML or RTF files.

The core technology behind xDoc is the xDoc Transformation Engine, or XTE for short, which is a pure Java platform that runs on JRE 1.4.2.  The XTE is packaged in and used by two CambridgeDocs products, the xDoc Converter Desktop and the xDoc Server

The xDoc Converter Desktop provides you with a Microsoft .NET graphical user interface, which you can use to develop sophisticated content mappings, and test on a local version of the XTE.

The xDoc Server provides you with a number of interfaces, including Servlet, .NET, Java, and Command-Line APIs, which you can use to call the XTE on a Windows, Solaris, or Linux machine to make transformations, and as part of any J2EE application server deployment like BEA WebLogic or IBM WebSphere.  The transformations can be specified by either prepackaged content mappings, or by content mappings developed with the xDoc Converter Desktop.

In short, the modular, cross-platform architecture of xDoc allows you to develop and test content mappings on low-cost Windows machines, and deploy those mappings on high-end Linux or Solaris machines for large-scale content transformations.
