CambridgeDocs xDoc XML to PDF Publishing

xDoc is able to publish XML content in PDF format through the use of its Java PublishPDF Driver, which is based on an enhanced version of Apache FOP technology.

Publishing XML to PDF is a two step process in xDoc.  First, the XML content is transformed to an XML formatting standard called XSL:FO, as shown below, through the use of another xDoc Driver, the Java XSLT Driver.  CambridgeDocs provides an XSLT stylesheet, out-of-the-box, to transform the stylistic XML content output from the xDoc Conversion Drivers into XSL:FO.

Once the content is in representative XSL:FO, the xDoc Java PublishPDF Driver reads in the FO and outputs a PDF file, as shown below:

The PublishPDF Driver has a number of options, including whether or not the PDF file:

  • Should require a user name and password to open, including what that user name and password should be
  • Should be "copy-able"
  • Should be "edit-able" in Adobe Acrobat
  • Should allow for "edit-able" annotations within Adobe Acrobat
